Dr. Anne Davies was inspired to create Building An Assessment Plan by her experiences as a teacher - and then later, her experiences supporting other teachers, to be confident and ready for grading, reporting and meeting with parents.


No two students are alike.

What’s more, every course and every subject area at every grade level has different learning outcomes, standards or expectations and each one requires different body of evidence of learning. And, as students show proof of their learning, the potential evidence of learning expands even more.

What is Building An Assessment Plan?

Building An Assessment Plan is a six module online course, with directions for individuals and facilitators, handouts, readings and videos.

Building An Assessment Plan walks you through these steps:

  • Describing the learning destination,
  • Deciding reliable and valid evidence of learning,
  • Thinking through quality and proficiency, and
  • Defining quality and achievement for evaluation.

Beginning With the End in Mind

Focus on the first step of building an assessment plan - developing a clear description for the learning destination, so that you are not the only one who understands it - students, parents and guardians understand it too!

Module 3:

Determining Reliable and Valid Evidence of Learning

Determining Reliable and Valid Evidence of Learning

Learn the second step of building an assessment plan - planning to collect reliable and valid evidence from multiple sources over time about what students need to know, understand, be able to do, and be able to articulate.

Module 4:

Describing Quality and Proficiency

Describing Quality and Proficiency

Understand the third step of building an assessment plan - planning for the samples, models and criteria that learners will need to better understand quality and proficiency. This process also helps teachers themselves better understand the quality levels students need to reach.

Module 5:

Professional Judgment and Evaluation

Professional Judgment and Evaluation

This module focuses on the fourth and final step of building an assessment plan - creating a description of achievement for one course or subject area. This description of quality will guide students as they collect evidence – proof of learning as well as help parents understand what is important.

In this module, we review, reflect, and help you revise your draft assessment plan and consider ways to support others to also do this important work.
